June 7 saw 70013 'Oliver Cromwell's return to the main line after winter maintenance at Loughborough, breaking new ground with a railtour from London to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the line to Seaford, in Sussex. The trip was so popular that a second run was laid on by promoter The Railway Touring Company, and the event turned into a wonderful demonstration of civic pride.
 
5305LA's support crew for the day was augmented for the first time by a live presence on Twitter; by the end of the day, the #Seaford150 hashtag created by @70013Cromwell had reached over fifty thousand users.
 
The Association cares for three locomotives from the National Collection, and as such has a desire and a responsibility to bring them - in their most engaging way as living, breathing machines - to the widest and most diverse audience possible. The trip to a celebratory Seaford proved to be just such an opportunity, as related by those who experienced it - loco and crew, railwaymen, passengers, journalists, commuters, parents with children, gricers, a camera shop, teenagers taking 'selfies', a brass band, competing sets of local politicians, a bed and breakfast and a sleeping banjo player...
 





































To the great disappointment of all concerned, 70013 suffered valve ring damage and had to be worked lightly for part of the day. 5305LA will provide an update on this regrettable development in due course. The 'incredible tweeting train' (not our words, the words of one of the signalmen!) will be back just as soon as possible, bringing the magic of main line steam to another corner of the country, and a device near you...
