Two Out Of Two
On a weekend which saw steam locomotive failures elsewhere in the country, both of 5305LA's performers came through their tests with flying colours.
First, 70013 Oliver Cromwell, successfully completed its charter from Bristol to Plymouth and back for the Railway Touring Company last Wednesday. Reports indicate that the loco performed up to its usual high standard on the difficult route over the Devon banks in each direction.
On the following day, 45305 was once again in charge of the Mersey Moorlander for Compass Tours. The load was the booked 11 coaches, unlike the week before when 12 had been hung on, making it more comfortable for the 'Five' to handle on the testing route over the Settle-Carlisle line and then southbound over the West Coast Main Line from Carlisle to Carnforth via Shap. Very heavy showers and low cloud negated the scenic effect and must have disappointed the passengers but this would have been made up for by the performance of 45305.
