Cromwell Storms, Fails and Recovers
70013 Oliver Cromwell was in charge of The Lincolnshire Poacher for the Railway Touring Company on Saturday the 3rd March. A noisy exit through the tunnels from Kings Cross was followed by a splendid climb to Potters Bar in a time which must match the best achieved with a 12 coach load. The rest of the journey down the East Coast Main Line as far as Retford was of similar standard. In stark contrast to this fast running during the early part of the tour, the route from Retford via Worksop and the South Yorkshire Joint Line had to be taken at a more sedate pace. After joining the Doncaster to Scunthorpe line at Kirk Sandal Junction, Cromwell could be opened up again on sections between there and Cleethorpes.
Unfortunately the locomotive had to be declared a failure in Cleethorpes station with problems in the left hand piston. This was These were later identified as broken piston rings. Repairs were done in Cleethorpes station on Sunday 4th March and the loco is expected to be fit for the run to Newcastle, Morpeth and York on Saturday 19th March.
