The Capital Five
That’s how our good friends at Tyseley Locomotive Works who did such splendid work on 45305 Alderman A E Draper’s boiler have described their forthcoming trip to London with 45305 on Saturday 6th November. (www.vintagetrains.co.uk) “Capital Five” a very apt description, nearly as good as “The Best Five”. We’ve had a few other descriptions of her recently, including “crisp beats and a clean white exhaust - lovely sight.”
The five performed very well on her recent “High Peak” trip, proving that she’s back in fine form. Despite a heavy train and greasy rail which caused a few problems on the way into Buxton, the Five’s Debut back onto the main line was a great success on a sell-out tour. The problems with slipping in the Buxton area were caused by track conditions rather than the locomotive and were solved by hand-sanding on the part of the support crew and excellent handling by West Coast’s crews.
45305 is straight off overhaul, which included the motion and bottom end as well as the boiler, so she’s like a sewing machine, which accounts for the crisp beats and clean exhaust. The route for the Capital Five is more gently graded than the Buxton trip, but will give her an excellent chance to stretch her legs and show off that lovely exhaust. So why not treat yourself to a trip behind her this coming weekend with the Capital Five – Treat your loved one and get the Christmas Shopping done early. (No, you misunderstand, what I meant by treat your loved one, was buy a ticket, which puts money towards 45305, honestly, what did you think I meant?).
After all, who wouldn’t want to be on the first Black Five into Euston in Preservation?
