Over the last few weeks, 5305 Locomotive Association and the 70013 Main Line Operating Committee have been working behind the scenes on a plan to “Twin” No. 70013 with another iconic steam locomotive. All of the plans have now been finalised and we are pleased to announce that No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell is is to “Twin” with 03.1010, which is owned by Germany's DB Museum and based at Halle in Saxony-Anhalt.

The National Railway Museum issued a press release today, which reads:

LAST STEAM LOCOS TO TWIN

The custodians of two iconic steam locomotives have announced they are to ‘twin’ within the next few months.

The volunteer groups who are responsible for No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell, the locomotive which pulled the last ever nationally owned steam-hauled train in Britain, and her East German contemporary No. 03 1010, are teaming up to raise the profile of their respective engines.

Last year the 5305 Locomotive Association celebrated 70013’s return to the mainline after a successful 4 year restoration project, while their German equivalent the BSW Gruppe Traditionsgemeinshaft Halle P is currently trying to raise funds for a similarly high profile overhaul of the country’s own national steam icon.

It is hoped that the unique partnership will unite the two countries in the spirit of preservation and international cooperation, as it will enable the teams to share ideas from their respective restoration projects.

The owners of the two locomotives, the National Railway Museum in York, and the DB Museum in Nuremberg said:”Our commitment to our countries’ National Collections is to demonstrate them to the widest possible audience. The symbolic joining of these two volunteer groups paves the way for further partnerships between our two countries and has our full support.”
