70013 “Oliver Cromwell” has been busy over the last week with two trips over the S&C; on Wednesday 27th and Sunday 31st August. Wednesday’s trip was, according to my correspondent, “good, but not as good as the Arthur last week.” but the Sunday trip was, according to the same source, brilliant, despite rain, signal checks and slippery rail.
Below is an extract from a performance log by John Rule who is an experienced timer. “This was a magnificent climb, the best I've had over the S&C for several years, and a great credit to Gordon Hodgeson (driver), Craig Stitchcombe (fireman) and all at Loughborough who have restored Cromwell - this Brit is a BEAST!” The full report of the trip will, I am assured by the editor, be appearing in the next 5305LA News so members will have the opportunity to read the whole thing in the magazine when it drops through their letterboxes.
It is time that I gave you an update on some other ongoing 5305LA tasks; the five’s boiler is still away at Tyseley, the work is still underway, but as ever, boiler work is slow and painstaking. The frames continue to receive attention in the form of cleaning and painting from the team.
The re-paint of the class 33 is still on-going, the vinyl numbers & “Arrows of Indecision” have been removed from the second side and Alan has been busy with body filler and sanders recently. Alan’s efforts on the 33 have been slightly diluted by his being unable to bear to watch the way that paint was being applied to parts of the N2, so he has, in his own words “taken that job in-house”, he and Alex have sanded back the offending areas and are now working up through the layers.
