With two engines working in different parts of Yorkshire again this week 5305LA have been rather busy. The Britannia has been working the Scarborough Spa Expresses again based at the NRM in York while 30777 Sir Lamiel worked the Dalesman again this Wednesday and put in a thrilling performance both ways over the Settle & Carlisle route.
The support crew for 30777 say that it was a great climb over the top in both directions, made even better by the fact that the week stayed mostly dry so they were able to clean and prep without being soaked to the skin, and were able to polish the paintwork without the rain making smears as soon as they started. Both of the West Coast drivers and one of the firemen had been on her recently and so were becoming familiar with her quirks, the fireman commented afterwards that he had begun trying to refine his firing technique now that he’s got used to her. The trip back from Appleby saw some evening sunshine which enabled one of the support crew to take this photo of the shadow thrown by the engine from Arten Gill viaduct.
The Brit is due back at Carnforth later this week and will be working the Dalesman next Wednesday, let’s hope that she gets some good weather as well. She has been putting in some good performances on the Scarborough trains, and many of the West Coast crews are eagerly anticipating the chance to work her, particularly as several of them knew her ‘back in the day’ when she and they all worked for ‘the old firm’.
We have had several compliments over the last couple of weeks, both for the engines and for the website. Craig Wellum emailed to say “I went on 1T57 on Sunday - excellent day indeed - Cromwell was awesome. Well done everyone.” Phil Marsh of Railway Magazine said “I looked at your website which is excellent” John Abson said “Excellent website which I visited to see latest on 70013.”
Several messages mentioned that 70013 was not at “Crown Point” in Norwich as it wasn’t built until 1982, she was originally allocated to Norwich Thorpe. Thank you to everyone who has mentioned that, we will be editing that page shortly, but that text is not steam-driven and I don’t have access to it.
